Tõnu Kõrvits

Tõnu Kõrvits (b. 1969) graduated with a BA in composition (advisor Raimo Kangro) from the Estonian Academy of Music in 1994. “Tõnu Kõrvits’s music opens a door from this world to the next – mystical world of traditional stories, myths and subconsciousness. His works are full of fantasy and constant change but his melodies are at the core – melodies as quiet speech from one’s soul. His melodies are often filled with sense of resignation, filled with quiet bursts that then wither away into eternity. Some melodies unexpectedly bloom into colourful blossoms and then scatter away again. But silence is as important – fade-outs, pauses, emptiness. Sometimes it feels that silence is even more important than actual music in Tõnu Kõrvits’s works. This silence is never empty – it hides a secret.”
