Inessa Green

Inessa Green (b. 1988) graduated from the Tallinn Music High School in the piano class of Mati Mikalai in 2007. In 2011, she graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (Mati Mikalai, BA) and obtained her Master’s Degree at the Karlsruhe University of Music (Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe) under Kalle Randalu. During that period, she also took jazz lessons from Kristjan Randalu and improvisation lessons from Joachim Krebs. In 2015–2016, she performed with the saxophone duo Quo Vadis Group and wrote several compositions for that ensemble. In 2016–2017, she studied media technology under Vincent Wikström. In 2017, she collaborated with Bodek Janke and this resulted in the CD Quo Vadis & Bodek Janke. With Janke, she has recorded compositions based on Estonian runic songs. In 2017–2018, she studied computer music under Petteri Sainio, in 2019 she studied media technology under Artjom Jagudim. In 2019, she enrolled at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre to study composition in Helena Tulve’s class (she also invented a new style, nel veto, which only employs the multiphonics of wind instruments); since 2021, her instructor is Toivo Tulev. In 2022, she started collaborating with the US songwriter Ryan Adams. Inessa: “My music is very minimalistic (Steve Reich, Philipp Glass, Terry Riley). As a Tallinn-born Estonian, I naturally feel a deep connection with Arvo Pärt’s music and his tintinnabuli-style, and with the music of Erkki-Sven Tüür and Urmas Sisask.”
