His piece “JenZeits” was awarded Europäische Komponistenpreis at the young.euro.classic festival in Berlin, 2005 and first prize in the category of composers under 30 years of age at the International Rostrum of Composers in Paris, 2007. His piece for voice and orchestra Swan Bone City received the Musical Composition Prize “The Young Musicians Favorite Choice” presented by The Prince Pierre Foundation of Monaco. In 2016 the piece was reworked into an opera. Ülo Krigul’s film scores play a crucial part in the masterpieces directed by Veiko Õunpuu, that have been remarkably successful at international film festivals. Krigul has studied with Raimo Kangro, René Eespere and Tõnu Kõrvits at Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and with Detlev Müller-Siemens at The University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna. For many years, he has been active as a keyboard player and arranger in numerous jazz, rock and experimental groups. He is a key figure at the Estonian contemporary music scene and for a decade shared artistic leadership of Estonian Music Days with Timo Steiner.
