Helena Tulve

Helena Tulve (b. 1972) is an Estonian composer whose music centres around change and the processes related to it. Her music springs from very simple impulses, influenced by natural and organic patterns and synchronisation. In addition to composition, she has thoroughly studied Gregorian chant, and various musical traditions continue to fascinate her. Tulve has written music for ensembles Vox Clamantis, Bang on a Can, Trio TM+, Robert Fleitz, Theatre of Voices, The Bright Future Ensemble and many others. Her most recent major works are the sacral performance Visiones commissioned by the Vienna Biennale and the opera Wölfe that premiered at the Mecklenburg State Theatre.

Since 2000, Helena Tulve teaches composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, and since 2015 she is the artistic director of the Estonian Music Days. She is also a member of ensemble EHA, which concentrates on sound objects and listening as an integral means of human communication. She has collaborated with artists and written music for films and theatre productions. She has released three albums: Sula (Thaw, Estonian Radio, 2005), Lijnen (ECM, 2008) and Arboles lloran por lluvia (ECM, 2014).
