The LHV new music award Au-tasu appreciates new Estonian music and composers and brings spotlight on the contemporary works that attract a wider following and deserve to be introduced to international audiences. The Estonian Composers’ Union and the LHV Bank who is sponsoring the award believe it is necessary to highlight the valuable and high-quality creative work that is done among the Estonian classical music composers. The award, given out for the fourth time this year, will recognise one composer for a new work of significant quality.

Petri Kumela, one of Finland’s most versatile and sought-after classical guitarists, is equally at home with period instruments as in working with contemporary composers. He is also one of the Finnish guitarists best known on the international scene, with a reputation for originality and versatility, whether he is giving a recital in Calcutta or a school concert in Japan, or motorising guitars in Mexico. An artist with a special commitment to contemporary music, Petri Kumela has premiered nine guitar concertos and numerous solo and chamber works both in Finland and abroad by for example Kalevi Aho, Paavo Korpijaakko, Olli Kortekangas, Minna Leinonen, Joachim F.W. Schneider, Poul Ruders, Riikka Talvitie, Lotta Wennäkoski and Pehr Henrik Nordgren. Kumela was the artistic director for the chamber music series of the Nordic Music Days 2013 and a new festival “Sound of Sipoo” started under his direction in Sipoo in 2017. The nine recordings released so far by Petri Kumela have all won high critical acclaim. Kumela has also made a number of recordings for the Finnish Broadcasting Company and other radio and television networks.

Estonian National Symphony Orchestra (ENSO) is the oldest continuously operating orchestra in Estonia. As many others of its kind, ENSO was established hand in hand with Estonian Public Broadcasting in 1926. ENSO has more than a hundred members and a wide repertoire, ranging from baroque to contemporary, and they premiere most of the symphonic pieces by Estonian composers. Since 2010, Neeme Järvi has been the artistic leader of ENSO. Paavo Järvi is the orchestra’s artistic adviser and Olari Elts the chief guest conductor.
