Lodewijk van der Ree

Lodewijk van der Ree (tenor/choirmaster) grew up in the Netherlands. He studied choir conducting at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Jos Vermunt and Jos van Veldhoven (bachelor) and at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with Hirvo Surva (master, cum laude) in Tallinn. He is especially interested in the vocal polyphony of the 14th and 15th century, and also loves collaborating with composers to bring new music to life.

Lodewijk conducted several choirs and ensembles such as the Asko Kamerkoor, Collegium Utrecht, de.fundo and Coqu. As choirmaster he prepared programs for Thomas Adès, Reinbert de Leeuw, Kevin John Edusei, Ed Spanjaard and others. In 2016 during the Tenso Days festival he conducted the premiere of Evelin Seppar’s Cities with the Netherlands Chamber Choir, and since that year he also regularly works with Cappella Amsterdam (chief conductor Daniel Reuss). Recent projects with them include the first performance of La porte de l’enfer by José María Sánchez-Verdú together with Cuarteto Quiroga during the String Quartet Biennale, and a tour around the Netherlands with the program Time and the Bell. Together with Daniel Reuss Lodewijk conducted performances of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s Engel-Prozessionen as a part of the Holland Festival 2019 production Aus Licht. Recently he was awarded the prestigious Dutch Kersjes Fonds conductors prize.

In 2016 Lodewijk moved to Tallinn, where he shares his life with composer Evelin Seppar. For three years he sang in Vox Clamantis (chief conductor Jaan-Eik Tulve). As a guest conductor Lodewijk has worked with the Chamber Choir of the University of Tartu, the Female Chamber Choir Sireen and chamber choirs Head Ööd, Vend and Voces Musicales. Since January 2020 he takes on a dual role as both choirmaster and singer with the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.
