Giacinto Scelsi

Giacinto Scelsi (1905–1988) was an Italian composer and surrealist poet. He is best known for writing music based around only one pitch, which seems to have been examined from within by altering it in all manners through microtonal oscillations, harmonic allusions, and changes in timbre and dynamics, etc. One of his most well-known compositions Quattro pezzi su una nota sola (“Four Pieces on a single note”, 1959) received recognition already during his lifetime, but most of his musical output remained largely undiscovered even to his close companions. And yet, his oeuvre encompassed all Western classical genres except scenic music and he collaborated with composers such as John Cage and Morton Feldman, who radically changed 20th century music and way of thought.
